Kids' Lit and Moomintroll
Hello listeners, and READERS!
Books. Over the course of the past four seasons of Hear You Go, I’ve made 14 episodes that have to do with the topic of books and reading. Let’s make it 15!
I know that you, like me, love to read, and I suspect that your love affair with the power of words, words that make stories, and stories that memories and connections… I suspect that this love affair started many years ago when you were a child. Am I right?
Questions of the day:
- Do you ever go back and read the books you read as a kid?
- Do you remember those stories?
- Do you wonder what makes a children’s book stay with us so long after childhood ends?
I felt inspired to record this episode of Hear You Go after receiving the gift of the children’s book for my birthday this past April. It was a Finnish book from the 1940s, a book in a series all about the friendly Moomin folk. Have you heard of the Moomin?
As luck would have it, not long after I received this book, I read an article about what we lose as adults when we stop reading children’s books. Serendipity!
Today then we’re looking at the value of children’s literature for kids and grown-ups alike.
🎙️Episode 97 is titled “Do You Know Moomintroll?”, and in it, I reflect on the stories that have stayed with me, from Winnie the Pooh to Matilda, and I try to make the case that children’s literature matters greatly for both adults and young people. I also introduce you to the enchanting world of the Moomins created by Finnish author Tove Jansson. Her Moomins live in a world of kindness, adventure, imagination, and quiet wisdom that offers lessons for us all. Along the way, I talk about nostalgia, creativity, language, of course, and the power of stories to comfort and transform us at any age. That’s why we gotta keep reading them! Additionally, I share a podcast series dedicated to all things Moomin - I highly recommend it!
Have a listen, review and explore the additional links, and let me know which books from your childhood are still with you today.
We are having a wrap party!
I’ve asked followers on Instagram if longtime fans of Hear You Go podcast would like to have what’s called in film and TV, a “wrap party”, a party to mark the end of production. Many said “Yes!”
The party is set for Saturday, August 15th at 9 AM EDT (Toronto/NYC). That would be 15h CEST and 10 AM (GMT-3) for those of you in Brazil.
It’s a casual Zoom gathering where we can get together to share our favourite episodes and which episodes have left a mark on you or your students.
